It took less than 20 seconds on Friday 9th July 2021, for James's entire world to come crashing down and to be irrevocably and irreversibly damaged and altered forever.
James was randomly attacked by a mentally unstable man with a machete. James was caught completely off guard and unaware.
It was only after this mentally unstable man continued to rain down on James with relentless and persistent strikes to his head, hands, arm and leg that James realised that his right, dominant hand had been severed into several pieces. It was a truly horrific experience.

The Doctor Who Used To Work With Severe Trauma Patients In The Military
One of the passengers on the train came to James's aid. This passenger is a doctor who used to be in the military, working with trauma patients.
The doctor was shocked when he checked James's pulse. He told James: "Your pulse should be racing or slow, because you lost so much blood. Your pulse is normal. This is not normal. I have not witnessed anything like this before. We should be calming you down, not the other way around."

This was a completely bizarre incident. We have never witnessed anything like this before. We were all shocked and inspired by James's mindset, positivity, strength, courage, compassion and determination to find a way for good to come through this tragic and horrific attack. We are pleased that we were able to ensure that justice was achieved for James and his family.

The Top Hand Plastic Surgeon In Europe
There are 500 plastic surgeons in London. Regardless of their respective expertise, if one of these plastic surgeons had operated on James, it is highly unlikely that he would still be with us today.
Our specialist team of surgeons, specialist plastics team, specialist occupational hand therapists and specialist hand physiotherapists here at St. Mary's Trauma Centre and Orthopaedic Fracture clinic never expected to see the movement that James now has in his right, severed hand. We are all astounded by James's rapid and radical recovery.
James was in theatre for over 12 hours. We almost lost him. James had about 140 stitches in total; 19 on his head, 16 on his elbow, 16 on his shin, 34 on his left thumb and 56 on his right hand. On the day after James's surgery, on a scale of 1-10 (where 0 = no hope and 10 = complete certainty) we had little hope (1/10) that James would have the movement that he now has in his right, severed hand. Going forward, we now expect James to make an almost full recovery (9/10) for the movement in his right, severed hand. This was completely unexpected. We have never witnessed anything like James's rapid and radical recovery before.
James is the difference maker. James is an exceptionally mentally strong, self-aware, courageous, compassionate and determined individual, with an extraordinary positive outlook on life. James was on a cocktail of 10+ highly addictive and strong pain management drugs, which he chose to go 'cold turkey' on, against his physician's expert advice, within 120 days of his life saving surgeries. We would have expected any other patient in James's position to remain on this recommended pain management programme for at least 12 months, if not indefinitely. When we asked James how he coped with the pain, his response astounded us yet again: "I don't know. I simply made the decision not to allow the pain to control me and not to allow the medication become a crutch and determine my reality."
No offence to James is intended, but we always looked forward to James's visits, because he was an experiment for us and we learned so much from his case study. We have never witnessed anything like this before. James's recovery, healing and rehabilitation is quite remarkable and a testimony for what is possible of the human spirit.
